Montreal, Canada, 2014-01-21 - The Centre de design de l’UQAM is hosting an exhibition on the work of Glenn Murcutt, Australia's most internationally recognized architect. Glenn Murcutt: Architecture for Place, running from February 6 to April 13, profiles a selection of the architect's work through drawings and photographs illustrating 40 years of his practice and working method. The focus is on several private residences, not open to the public, reflecting the architect's concern for harmony between building and nature.

The exhibition curator is Börkur Bergmann, director of the UQAM Centre de Design. It is produced by Architecture Foundation Australia and is presented in Montreal in collaboration with MP Reproductions Inc.

Glenn Murcutt: Architecture for Place
With his early concern for the sustainability of the natural environment, Murcutt has been at the forefront of contemporary architecture. His built works, mostly private homes, demonstrate rare formal eloquence and refinement of detail. They are designed to bring the qualities of the surrounding environment into the daily lives of the occupants. This prolific architect has realised more than 500 buildings over the course of his career, all built in Australia. With a few rare exceptions, he designs and supervises his own projects.

The exhibition features drawings illustrating the architect's creative process through the various stages of design, from rough sketches to working drawings. Photos by British photographer Anthony Browell demonstrate the harmony between the buildings and their natural environment.

About Glenn Murcutt
Glenn Murcutt has been recognized with numerous awards over the years, including the RAIA Gold Medal from the Royal Australian Institute of Architecture in 1992, the Order of Australia in 1996, the Pritzker Prize ¬– architecture's "Nobel Prize" ¬– in 2002, and the AIA Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects in 2009.

Glenn Murcutt was born in London, England in 1936 to Australian parents. He spent his early childhood in New Guinea before moving with his family to Sydney, Australia in 1941. He graduated from Sydney Technical College (now the University of New South Wales) in 1961. Following a study tour in Europe and experience in leading architectural offices in Australia, he founded his own practice in 1969. Since then, he has carried out his work mainly as a sole practitioner, without staff but with collaborators on a project-by-project basis. He pursues an architecture that is rooted in Australia’s culture and its diverse climate and topography, while being active internationally as a teacher and speaker at universities around the world.
