Michel Bouvet's poster art
September 12 to November 3, 2013
Vernissage: Wednesday, September 11 at 6 pm

Gros Plan will present sixty posters by Michel Bouvet, covering the designer's thirty-year career. The exhibition will include several of his note boards, drawings and sketches, shedding light on the richness of his ideas, his approach to his subject, and his creative process. Working in black and white or in colour, and using photographs (in collaboration with photographer Francis Laharrague) or drawings, Michel Bouvet is always mindful that a poster must arrest and inform the passer-by— thus the bold text and large central image. The great Raymond Savignac said of the poster: "To be seen, it must be bold but not brash." Michel Bouvet applies this precept after a thorough study of the subject at hand. He assesses potential options, tests them out, and offers an original, accessible solution, handled with his skill as a communicator and artist. An illustrated lesson in poster design.

The Fashion Design of Ying Gao

The UQAM Centre de Design, in collaboration with curator Renée Baert, will present an exhibition devoted to Ying Gao, fashion designer, professor at UQAM's School of Design and École supérieure de mode, and winner of the 2009 Phyllis Lambert Design Montréal Grant. Her creations, integrating technology and interactivity, have been seen around the world and have been discussed in numerous journal articles and books on art and design. She was the only fashion designer on the list of Top 40 Canadians in the British magazine Wallpaper (2009). While the 2011 exhibition Ying Gao: art, mode et technologie, at the Musée National des Beaux-arts du Québec, presented a selection of eight pieces (created between 2006 and 2010), The Intangible as Material – The Fashion Design of Ying Gao, her first major solo show in Montreal (where she lives and works), will present previously unseen research-creations by the artist.

The Work of Glenn Murcutt

Glenn Murcutt, winner of the 2002 Pritzker Architecture Prize, is Australia's most internationally renowned architect. His prolific, consistent work clothes a high degree of complexity in apparent simplicity. Realised over a period of 40 years, it includes more than 500 designs, all built in Australia and almost exclusively residential. With rare exceptions, he designs and oversees all his own projects. This traveling exhibition, produced by Architecture Foundation Australia, presents a selection of his projects and examines his process, mainly through his drawings, essential tools of discovery. "[Architecture] is a marvellous expression of the process of discovery… It’s like a scientist … who doesn’t know the answer but knows the path to it… That is what I’m in it for, the joy of the path, the discovery," says Murcutt. Anthony Browell's photographs, included in the exhibition, reveal the harmony between the buildings and their natural environment, demonstrating that Murcutt's sustainable approach to architecture was well ahead of its time.

A series of projections on the facade of the Design Pavilion
Projected from Wednesday to Sunday at dusk on the facade of the UQAM Design Pavilion, this work varies to reflect events in the Quartier des Spectacles and programming at the Centre de Design. It is realised as part of the illumination of the Centre, in close collaboration with the Quartier des Spectacles.
